Cold Season with a Side of Flu
By: William Bransford II
As the cold season continues we are seeing a lot more people feeling under the weather (myself included). Nothing is more annoying than going on a vacation and coming back sick. After being on a cruise ship and looking around us, I can totally understand how it happens now. Unless it is a stacation, you can usually count on catching something. Anything from a head cold to the Flu, the possibilities are endless. I feel that all of us would rather prevent colds. So here is a little of what I have found that might help. Most of all, always check with a doctor to be sure it is what is best for you.
Purchase a cab from us to stay out of the weather as much as possible. (You don't have to check with a doctor about that) Just kidding, we can't guarantee that will stop it all, but it might stop some. On to the rest of the information.
Things to keep in mind while traveling or out in the weather to help prevent risk:
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water
- Use hand sanitizer when handwashing isn’t available (70% alcohol at minimum)
- Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Stay home when sick and avoid close contact with others who are ill
Certain vitamins and minerals play an important role in immune health as well. They include:
- Vitamin C: oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli (You can also use the Emergen-C Vitamin C drink mix, this is what I use, but apprently I need to use it more often)
- Zinc: lean meats, poultry, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains (These are also available in a pill option)
- Vitamin D: fatty fish (salmon, tuna), egg yolks, fortified milk and cereals (These are also available in a pill option)
- Men/Womens daily vitamins can also supply all of the above.
Some doctors and people will tell you that probiotics will help as well. I can't confirm that, but my sister swears by it. She is older and has to be right, right? Either way, eating well, staying hydrated, getting enough rest, and following the prevention measures should help out a lot. As we head into the new year, be safe, stay healthy, and we hope that 2026 will bring everyone good tidings.
